The good news: WordPress is free, it's Web 2.0, it's easy to update, and Google loves it.
The bad news: Non-technical people -- like you and me -- usually can't customize it.
The solution: Sites that Soar, an ebook -- written by an artist -- that makes WordPress themes easy!
Aisling talks about this book |
Here's my story: Early in 2008, I got serious about online marketing. My old website looked, well.... old. I knew that I needed to update it.
I wanted a website that
- looks great,
- is interactive (Web 2.0),
- is easy to update,
- and soars to the top of Google's pages.
WordPress was the obvious choice. I mean, it's free. Then, when I saw the new WordPress themes -- including Mimbo and Branford Magazine -- I got really excited. They're free and they look great!
Suddenly, WordPress didn't look like 'just another blog'. I could hardly wait to try it out.
But... I'm an artist, not a programmer.
I asked my friends for advice, but many of them were having the same problems. It was SO frustrating!
Nobody explains this stuff to non-programmers like me. I spent over a week -- working day and night -- trying to figure out how to install and tweak the FREE software I wanted to use.
See, I don't really understand computer code. I know just enough HTML to get by.
Sure, the theme looked great... but the 'official' instructions to add my articles, my sidebar, and my pictures... I had no idea what they were talking about. By the time I got to "Custom Fields," I was tired and cranky, and feeling pretty stupid.
Finally, I started reading forums... WordPress forums, marketing forums, theme forums. I tried everything they said, and some of it worked! I solved my sidebar problems. I learned which free plugins work, and which don't. And, a little at a time, the site started looking good.
And then, I wrote a book about it.

for just $17.
There's even more good news. Updating my website takes less than a third as much time as it used to. That's a huge improvement!
And, here's the really amazing part:
My site had been buried somewhere on page five at Google, if anyone was searching for information about the business of art.
Within three days of using WordPress with the Branford Magazine theme, my site soared to the third spot on Google's first page, for my keywords.
(I even outranked American Artist magazine, the Getty museum, and Wikipedia.)
In the month that followed, my website remained at least among the top five. [ screenshot 1 - screenshot 2]
And, it's stayed on Google's first page ever since.
I did the same thing with two more websites, with similar results. Each time, I learned more shortcuts. Now, I can customize a WordPress theme--with fresh graphics, a unique sidebar, and all the plugins--in a little over an hour.
I explain the process, step-by-step. I've included lots of screenshots from WordPress 2.5.* Here are what two of the pages look like. You can download the actual pages, to see them.

Here's some of what you'll learn in this book...
Can I change my name from "admin" on my website? How can I improve my Google rank, without a lot of work? How do I get rid of that "About this theme" tab? Can I change the background color so it looks better with my graphics?
Can I rearrange the categories on my homepage? I do not understand Custom Fields. Can you help? |

"I have been blogging and using the internet for years, but have always been intimidated by the thought of establishing my own free-standing webpage.
'Sites that Soar' has all of the information I would need to set up my first page and make it rock, in a clear and easy-to-follow instructional format. "Now all I need to do is decide what to call it! Thanks!" -- Vernon Pope

I have read through Sites that Soar, and I'm just amazed at how comprehensive, yet SUCCINCT you've managed to
make this!
You've created maps and timelines and all of the visuals that someone like me needs (I do know html and css, but am really clueless about php and in particular, Wordpress has scared me off several attempts prior!). I feel like this is just the tool I need to get me where I want to be with a Web 2.0 version of my site, that doesn't cut into my time to serve clients and make music! --- Dana Detrick-Clark, Audio Specialist, Perfect Audio Solutions. |
| "Aisling's e-book, Sites that Soar, takes what makes starting a blog hard out of the picture and replaces it with easy to understand instructions.
She shows you how to make your own website using the WordPress blogging system; taking you from purchasing your own domain to customizing it with text and images. Her clear, crisp writing and fun, helpful examples not only show you how to set up your blog but how to do it in style. Aisling proves that you don't need to have previous coding experience to install a WordPress blog and take a free layout and customize it to fit your site's need. I highly recommend and endorse this e-book to all my friends who want to start their own blogs."
